AirC2IS is the Alliance air command and control information capability procured through the NATO Communications and Information Agency. SynapseCommand is designed to support the planning and decision work that surrounds air command, and this page is explicit about how little of the system's interface detail is public.

What AirC2IS is

Air Command and Control Information Services is recorded in NATO procurement material as an Alliance air command and control information capability, with the NATO Communications and Information Agency responsible for procuring and maintaining it. Successive increments have been the subject of open NATO competitive procurement.

Published accounts by engineers involved in its development place it at the strategic level of air command and control, supporting planning and management activity for air operations, with an associated ballistic missile defence planning dimension. Detailed descriptions beyond that come mainly from supplier material rather than from the Alliance.

No first-party NATO publication describing AirC2IS interfaces, message formats or data standards was identified. That absence is the reason the integration status on this page is deliberately conservative.

Air command and control is a planning-heavy discipline with a hard clock. The tasking cycle has to close whether or not the analysis is finished, which is precisely the pressure that produces unexamined assumptions.

SynapseCommand supports the analytical part of that cycle: understanding the air picture as reported, developing and comparing options, and preserving why a tasking decision was made. Air tasking support is a specific agent function within the mesh rather than an afterthought.

SynapseCommand does not task aircraft, does not control sensors or effectors, and does not act as an air command and control system. The Alliance system retains that role entirely.

Air tasking support

A dedicated agent supports the tasking cycle by developing and checking options against stated availability and constraint, without generating tasking authority of its own.

Air picture understanding

Reporting is normalised so that timing and confidence stay attached, which matters when the difference between two tracks is seconds.

Option comparison under time pressure

The value of the mesh is producing several defensible options inside the cycle rather than one option that survived because it was first.

A dedicated connector can be developed for a customer, integration programme or deployment.

AirC2IS is confirmed by NATO procurement records as an Alliance air command and control information capability, but no public documentation of its interfaces, data formats or exchange mechanisms was identified. Without that, any stronger claim than a connector developed on request would rest on assumption rather than evidence.

Qualification

This status describes what could be developed for a customer or programme. It does not imply NATO certification, endorsement, an accredited interface or a completed deployment with AirC2IS.

Interfaces and data standards

SynapseCommand supports ASTERIX and ADS-B for air surveillance data in general. Neither has been publicly documented as an AirC2IS interface, so neither is presented here as an integration path. Where the integration path is unknown, this page says so rather than inventing one.

The SynapseCommand data contract is published for inspection in the open integration layer.

Open interoperability layer

SynapseCommand connects to external systems through an openly published interoperability layer rather than proprietary point interfaces. The canonical data model, the JSON Schema and the format adapters are inspectable before any integration is committed to. That layer describes what SynapseCommand implements; it is not a statement about AirC2IS and implies no interface to it.

Does SynapseCommand task aircraft?
No. It supports the analysis and comparison around tasking. Tasking authority remains entirely with the air command and control system and the humans who operate it.
Why is the status available on request rather than something stronger?
Because no public documentation of AirC2IS interfaces or data formats was identified. Claiming a standards-based path would require evidence that a specific interface exists and is supported, and that evidence is not available.
What would an integration require?
Authorised access to the deployment and its interfaces, agreement on an exchange mechanism with the owning authority, connector development against the published SynapseCommand contract, and testing.
Can SynapseCommand operate alongside the system?
It is designed to. It runs inside a sovereign environment, makes no external model calls, and consumes and returns data rather than displacing the command system.
